| Athenian orator and statesman. Probably a pupil of Plato and Isocrates, he became a professional speech-writer. He was a supporter of Demosthenes for many years, but in the corruption case involving Harpalus, he was one of Demosthenes' accusers. He promoted the Lamian War against Macedonia (323–22 BC) after the death of Alexander, but was captured and put to death when the Athenians were defeated. |
