| biography:
| One of the apostolic Fathers of the Church, reckoned variously as the second or third successor of St Peter at Rome, possibly 88–97 or 92–101. He may have been a freedman of Jewish parentage belonging to Caesar's household. The first of two epistles attributed to him is generally accepted as his (written c.96); it is written to the Corinthian Church, and treats of social dissensions, the nature of early Christian ministry, and the resurrection. He was probably martyred. Later, several spurious works were circulated in his name, such as the Clementine Homilies. Feast day 23 November. |
