| biography:
| Hellenistic Jewish philosopher, born in Alexandria. His work brought together Greek philosophy and the Hebrew Scriptures and greatly influenced subsequent Greek Christian theologians such as Clement and Origen. His commentaries on the Pentateuch interpret it according to the philosophical ideas of Plato and Aristotle; their doctrines in turn were modified by him in the light of Scripture. In c.40 he headed a deputation to Emperor Caligula in support of Jewish rights. |
