| biography:
| Protestant religious leader, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at Harvard (1855), taught briefly, and was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1859. His famous hymn ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ was first sung in 1868. He served as pastor of Trinity Church (1869–91) and was university preacher at Harvard. His Lectures on Preaching were published in 1877, and he died not long after he was consecrated Episcopal Bishop of Massachusetts (1893). |
