| Anatomist and physical anthropologist, born in Durban, E South Africa. He studied at Witwatersrand and Cambridge universities, and in 1951 began to teach at Witwatersrand, becoming professor of anatomy in 1959. He is a leading authority on human biological evolution, with over 700 publications including The Brain in Hominid Evolution (1971), The Meaning of Race (1972), Hominid Evolution: Past, Present and Future (1985), and Images of Humanity (1991). |
