| Geographer and antiquarian, born in Gdańsk, N Poland (formerly Danzig of Germany). He studied law at Leyden, and visited many countries, including Norway, England, Scotland, France, and Italy. He wrote Introductio in universam geographium (1624, Introduction to Universal Geography), and is regarded as the founder of historical geography. |
