| Painter, born in Broughton-in-Furness, Cumbria, NW England, UK. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where he later became head of drawing and painting (1960–82). Like many Scottish artists of his generation, he handled paint freely and colours boldly, but always retained a precise figurative element in his work. He was president of the Royal Scottish Academy (1973–83). |
