| Painter of battle and hunting scenes, born in Haarlem, The Netherlands. His pictures are mostly small landscapes, with several figures in energetic action. His cavalry skirmishes, with a white horse generally in the foreground, were especially characteristic and popular. He had two brothers, also painters, Peter Wouwerman (1623–82) and Jan Wouwerman (1629–66), who chose similar subjects. |
