| Engineer, born in Paris, France. He became a teacher of mathematics at the Collège Royal, and five years later professor at the Royal Academy of Architecture. His most notable work is the Traité de Méchanique (1695), in which he correctly analysed the forces acting at various points in an arch, making use of geometrical techniques now generally known as graphic statics. |
