| biography:
| Southern Netherlands nobleman, who opposed Granvelle but still opted for Spain because of his religion. He was an adviser to Margaret of Parma and was made Grand Bailiff of Hainault. Alva made him a member of the Council of Blood, but he was not an active one and strove for clemency. He fought successfully against the Republic of The Netherlands, taking Maastricht, Tournai, and Valenciennes, and was appointed stadtholder of Utrecht and Holland after Bossu. He died as a result of a wound at the siege of Alkmaar. |
