| biography:
| French statesman and historian, born in the castle of Comines, near Courtrai, France. In 1463 he entered the court of Burgundy, but in 1472 passed over to the service of Louis XI of France. He was rewarded with the rich fief of Talmont, married the heiress of Argenton, and became one of Louis's most trusted advisers. He accompanied Charles VIII (1470–98) on his Italian expedition (1494), and was present at the Battle of Fornovo. His Mémoires (published 1524) on the period 1464–98 are the earliest French example of history as distinguished from chronicle. |
