| Poet, essayist, and critic, born in Tinchebray, NW France. In 1916 he joined the Dadaist group, and in 1922 turned to Surrealism. He published his first Surrealist manifesto in 1924, and became editor of La Révolution surréaliste. His major novel, Nadja, was published in 1928, and his collected poems in 1948. |
