| biography:
| Playwright, born in Tours, WC France. After classical studies in Tours and Paris, he entered the diplomatic service, and in 1717 was sent to England where he became influenced by Restoration drama. Back in Paris he gained success with the comedy Le Philosophe marié (1727). His masterpiece, Le Glorieux (1732), presents the conflict between the nobility and the bourgeoisie. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1753. |
