biography: Duke of Burgundy from 1363, the youngest son of Jean II of France. He won his nickname at Poitiers. He was presented with Burgundy by his father in 1363, and in 1369 married Margaret of Male, the daughter of the Count of Flanders, on whose death in 1384 he inherited the counties of Flanders, Artois, Franche Comté, Rethel, Nevers, and the towns of Antwerp and Malines, to which he added the county of Charolais by purchase in 1390. He defeated the rebels led by Ghent at Westrozebeke in 1382 on behalf of France, during the minority of Charles VI of France. In 1385 he came to an agreement with Ghent by the Treaty of Tournai, and supported Johanna of Brabant in her conflict with Brabant in 1388.
