| biography:
| Flemish leader, born in Ghent, the son of Jacob of Artevelde. He took asylum in England after the murder of his father (1345), but returned to Ghent in 1360 and led the town in the revolt against Louis de Male, Count of Flanders. After his capture of Bruges in 1382, which gave the rebels control of Flanders, Philip the Bold, Louis de Male's son-in-law, persuaded Charles VI of France to send an army. This defeated the Flemings at Westrozebeke, where Philip was killed. |
