| Caricaturist, born in Wortley, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. Orphaned at the age of nine, he endured years of poverty before he became poster artist and cartoonist of the St Stephen's Review. He went to Australia, and on his return in 1890 established himself with contributions to Punch (of which he was a staff member from 1896) and other periodicals. He excelled in depicting East London types, and brought a new simplicity of line to popular cartooning. |
