| biography:
| Dutch ruler, Prince of Orange, born in Buren, The Netherlands, the eldest son of William I of Orange and Anne of Buren. As a student in Louvain in 1568 he was abducted by Alva and taken to Spain as a hostage, and was further educated at the Spanish court. In 1596 he returned to the Southern Netherlands with Archduke Albert's court. He was given his father's confiscated possessions by Philip II, took part in some skirmishes against France, but refused to take up arms against his brother Maurice. He married Eleonore Charlotte de Condé in 1606, but the marriage remained childless, and his titles and estates were inherited by Maurice. |
