| biography:
| Physicist, born in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. He studied antenna engineering at the Naval Research Laboratories in World War 2, and at Harvard under John H Van Vleck. He was research scientist at Bell Telephone Laboratories (1949–84), visiting professor of physics at Cambridge (1967–75), and professor of physics at Princeton in 1975. He shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1977 for his work on the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems. |
