| First Bourbon king of Spain (1700–46), born in Versailles, NC France, the grandson of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa, and great-grandson of Philip IV of Spain. After a long struggle with the rival Habsburg candidate for the Spanish succession, Philip gained the throne at the Peace of Utrecht (1713), but lost the Spanish Netherlands and Italian lands. Twice married, he fell under the influence of his second wife, Elizabeth Farnese of Parma, whose desire to secure Italian possessions for her sons brought Spain into conflict with Austria, Great Britain, France, and the United Provinces. |
