| biography:
| Circus proprietor of German descent, born in Victoria, SE Australia. His father and his three brothers formed their own circus troupe (1878), which soon became popular throughout Australia and New Zealand. A world tour later took in South Africa, South America, and England, and the circus returned through Asia to establish permanent bases in Sydney and Melbourne. He was renowned for his ability to break in and school wild animals, and his sons and daughters continued the family tradition until the 1960s. |
