| Playwright, born near Salisbury, Wiltshire, S England, UK. After leaving Oxford without a degree, he became a playwright apprenticed to Henslowe. Much of his work after 1613 is in collaboration with others, especially Fletcher. The City Madam (1632) and A New Way to Pay Old Debts (1633) are among his best-known satirical comedies. He is credited with having contributed, with Shakespeare, to portions of Henry VIII and of Two Noble Kinsmen, both printed in 1634. |
