As major-general of the northern department of New York, he was preparing to invade Canada when ill health compelled him to tender his resignation (1779). Besides acting as commissioner for Indian affairs, he sat in Congress (1777–81), and became state senator (1780–97), US senator (1789–91, 1797–8), and surveyor-general of New York (from 1782). |
