| biography:
| Playwright, born in Rochester, New York, USA. After serving with the US State Department in World War 1, he attended George Pierce Baker's ‘47 Workshop’ at Harvard, and began a lifetime career as a playwright. He gained most success with light social comedies, including Holiday (1928) and The Philadelphia Story (1939). His ambitions towards serious psychological and philosophical theatre could be seen in his plays Hotel Universe (1930), Bright Star (1935), and Here Come the Clowns (1938). However, these more sombre pieces did not appeal to his public, and he returned to comedy. |
