| biography:
| King of France (1179–1223), born in Paris, France, the son of Louis VII (reigned 1137–79). His reign formed a key period in the development of the mediaeval kingdom of France. He embarked on the Third Crusade in 1190, but returned the following year to concentrate on attacking the continental lands of the Angevin kings of England. By the time he died, Capetian power was firmly established over most of France. |
