| biography:
| Law professor and government official, born in New York City, New York, USA. He taught international law at Columbia University in the 1930s. He helped in planning post-World War 2 relief, in founding the United Nations and Israel, and in ending the Berlin blockade. Accused by Senator Joseph McCarthy of being pro-Communist, he was completely absolved by a senate committee (1951). He resumed teaching at Columbia (1953) and sat on the International Court of Justice (1961–70). |
