| English navigator, who sailed as lieutenant in John Byron's voyage round the world (1764–6), and commanded the Swallow in Samuel Wallis's expedition round the world (1766). Separated from Wallis while clearing the Strait of Magellan, he discovered Pitcairn I and other small islands (one of the Solomons bears his name) and returned round the Cape of Good Hope to England in 1769. |
