| First governor of New Jersey, USA, born in Jersey, Channel Islands, UK. After arriving at Elizabethport (1665) he instituted a government and summoned the first New Jersey legislature (1668). Following a challenge to his government by Sir Edmund Andros (1680) he was re-instated as governor, but he relinquished his office and died shortly after. |
