| Architect, born in Lyon, SC France. One of the great Renaissance architects, after a stay in Italy he introduced a classical style to France which lasted to the mid-18th-c. Royal architect to Henry II (of France), his works include the châteaux of Anet and Meudon, the tomb of François I at Saint-Denis, the Château des Tuileries (1564), built for Catherine de' Medici, and the gallery at Chenonceaux. He wrote two books, Le Premier Tome de l'Architecture and L'Architecture (1567). He was appointed royal architect to Henri II. |
