| biography:
| Dutch Catholic statesman, academic, and journalist, born in Leiden, W Netherlands. He first entered parliament in 1903, and as minister of labour (1918–25) was responsible for the 1919 Labour Act. He also served as minister for trade and industry (1922–5), minister of state (1934), and member of the Council of State (1937–46). He became professor of law at Delft (1916–18). In his literary career he was chief editor of Katholiek Sociaal Weekblad (1902–30) and editor of Het Centrum (1925–8), often writing under the pseudonym Joh.Kerkvliet Arz. |
