| Dutch politician, prime minister (1965–71), and naval officer, born in Apeldoorn, C Netherlands. During World War 2 he took his submarine to England and commanded her throughout the war with distinction. After his retirement from the navy he entered politics for the Catholic People's Party (KVP) becoming minister of defence (1963–7), prime minister (1965–71), and leader of his party (1972–4). |
