| Painter, born in Baerle, Brabant, C Belgium, who became a master in Bruges in 1444. He is often said to have been the pupil or assistant of Jan van Eyck. He may have visited Italy, and it is thought that he was an important source for the transmission of the Eyckian technique to Italian painters, in particular Antonello da Messina. |
