| Poet, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A clergyman in Delft, he put humour as well as more serious messages into his popular poetry. After he lost his wife and youngest child to tuberculosis in 1859, he had to resign due to poor health and remained jobless until his death, also by tuberculosis, in 1861. |
