| biography:
| German political activist, co-founder of the Green Party, born in Günzburg, S Germany. She moved to the USA at the age of 13 when her mother married a US serviceman, and became actively involved in the antiwar and civil rights demonstrations of the 1960s while a student at the American University, Washington. She returned to Germany, joined the Social Democratic Party, but quit in 1979 to help found the Green Party, and was elected to the Bundestag in 1983. She became involved with Gert Bastian, a general who had resigned his commission to take up the Green cause, and her body was found near his in the house they shared. She is believed to have been shot by him before he took his own life. |
