| biography:
| Religious leader, born in Lyon, SC France. A rich merchant, he was moved to reject his way of life and to take up a life of poverty and preaching (c.1170). He gathered a group of followers, known as Waldensians, and sought papal approval at the Third Lateran Council (1179), but failed and was forbidden to preach. He was later excommunicated by Pope Lucius III at the Synod of Verona (1184). The Waldensians later departed from orthodox Roman Catholic teaching in several ways, such as by rejecting some of the sacraments. |
