| Actor and comedian, born in Southsea, Hampshire, S England, UK. After a spell as a stand-up comic and impressionist, he moved into radio. His meeting with Spike Milligan heralded The Goon Show (1951–9), which revolutionized British radio comedy. He made his film debut in 1951, and became one of the stalwarts of British film comedy, appearing in The Ladykillers (1955), I'm All Right Jack (1959), and Only Two Can Play (1962). Lolita (1962) and Dr Strangelove (1963) established his international reputation, and his popularity was unrivalled as the incompetent Inspector Clouseau in a series of films that began with The Pink Panther (1963) and extended beyond his death to The Trail of the Pink Panther (1982). He received an Oscar nomination for Being There (1980). |
