| Ballet dancer and director, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. His parents were principals with the Royal Danish Ballet, where he trained from the age of seven. In 1964 he moved to Canada to become soloist with the National Ballet of Canada. He returned less than two years later, and danced for various companies, including the London Festival Ballet (1970) and New York City Ballet (1974–7), then returned to Canada as principal (1977–83). He became artistic director (1984–90) of the London Festival Ballet (which in 1988 was re-named the English National Ballet), and director of ballet at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin (1990–3) and the Royal Danish Ballet (1994–5). |
