| Sociologist, born in Vienna, Austria. He emigrated to the USA in 1939, studied at Columbia University (PhD), then taught at the University of Chicago (1953–70), Columbia (1977–88), and the University of North Carolina (1970–7, 1988). A specialist in organizational and social structure, particularly bureaucracy, his works include Exchange and Power in Social Life (1964) and The American Occupational Structure (1967). |
