| Composer, born in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at the Eastman College of Music, then taught at the Juilliard School, New York City (1947–58), became its president (1962–83), and was also director of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore (1958–62). He rapidly established himself as a composer of large-scale works, composing nine symphonies, including The Cycle - a choral work to his own text. |
