| biography:
| Composer, born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. He studied at the Conservatory of Melbourne University, and later in Oxford with Egon Wellesz and Edmund Rubbra. His work is much influenced by the vast spaces of the Australian landscape, and the sounds and rhythms of Asia and the Pacific, and includes the continuing Irkanda series, four Sun Music pieces, the operas Rites of Passage (1974) and Quiros (1982). Other major works include a cello requiem (1979), a piano concerto (1983), and Child of Australia (1987) - a setting of text by Thomas Keneally (1935– ) for Australia's bicentennial celebrations. |
