| King of Serbia, born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, the son of Prince Alexander Karadjordjević (reigned 1842–59). He fought in the French army in the Franco-Prussian war (1870–1), and was elected King of Serbia in 1903. In World War 1 he accompanied his army into exile in Greece in 1916. He returned to Belgrade in 1918, and was proclaimed titular king of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes until his death, although his second son, Alexander (later Alexander I), was regent. |
