| biography:
| Australian soldier and explorer, born in Cheshire, NWC England, UK. He served in the Indian Army for 24 years, and settled in Australia in 1853, where he became police commissioner until 1867. After earlier journeys to explore the South Australian Salt Lakes, in 1873 he became the first to cross Australia from the S coast to C Australia via Alice Springs, and across the worst of the desert country to the De Grey R on the W coast. |
