| biography:
| Actor, comedian, and musician, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford. Small in stature but big in personality he was one of the successful Beyond the Fringe team (1960–64). He joined Peter Cook for the TV series Not Only... but also (1964–70), and starred in several films including 10 (1979), Arthur (1981), Santa Claus - The Movie (1985), Arthur 2 - On the Rocks (1988), Crazy People (1990), and Blame it on the Bellboy (1992). An accomplished musician, he performed for radio and TV with his own jazz piano trio, and composed for several films and plays. In 1991 he co-presented the television series Orchestra! with Sir Georg Solti. In 1999 he was diagnosed as having a degenerative brain disease, progressive supranuclear palsy. |
