| biography:
| Folklorist, born in Oslo (formerly Christiania), Norway. He studied at the university there, then for four years was a tutor in the country. In long journeys on foot he collected a rich store of popular poetry and folklore, and, with his lifelong friend Jörgen Moe (1813–82), Bishop of Christiansand, published the famous collection of Norwegian folk tales, Norske Folkeeventyr (1841–4). |
