| Novelist, born in Vrededorp, NE South Africa. Most of his work was produced in exile. The impoverished township where he was born is vividly recreated in a memoir, Tell Freedom (1954). His third novel, Mine Boy (1946), won critical notice. His mature work produced novels which dealt mainly with the political struggles of black people, such as A Wreath for Udomo (1956), A Night of their Own (1965), This Island Now (1966), The View from Coyaba (1985), and The Fan (1995). |
