| Tennis player, born in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. He turned professional in 1988, and went on to become the youngest men's US Open champion (1990), a title he subsequently won in 1993, 1995, 1996, and 2002. The most successful player of his generation, his other notable achievements include the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour World Championship in 1991, 1994, and 1996–7, and Wimbledon in 1993–5 and 1997–2000, and he reached No 1 in the world rankings in seven successive years (1993–2000). In 2000 he set a new milestone by winning his seventh Wimbledon singles, in the process setting a new world record of 13 Grand Slam titles. He started the fund-raising ‘Aces for Charity’ (participants give $100 to charity for every ace served) in 1997. |
