| Seismologist, born in Clarinda, Iowa, USA. His career at the University of California, Berkeley (1925–64) included the directorship of its seismographic station (1950–62). From his study of travel-time curves of W North American earthquake waves, he postulated that the earth's mantle is discretely layered and penetrated by the base structures of mountains. |
