| biography:
| Travel writer, born in Córdoba, S Spain. A descendant of Pedro Ruyz de Córdoba, he grew up in the household of Luis de Guzmán, Maestre de Calatrava, and took part in the wars of the time. In autumn 1435 he began his travels from Sanlúcar de Barrameda and, arriving in Genoa, travelled in Italy, Switzerland, France, and Germany before setting out for the Holy Land. His journeys, which lasted until 1439 and took him to Rhodes, Cyprus, Egypt, and Judaea, were recalled long after with gusto and a fine sense of humour in Andanças y viajes por diversas partes del mundo avidos, edited from an incomplete 18th-c. manuscript by M Jiménez de la Espada (1874) in the Colección de Libros Españoles Raros y Curiosos, and again by J M Ramos (1934). |
