| Pretender to the English throne, born in Tournai, W Belgium. In 1492 he was persuaded by enemies of Henry VII to impersonate Richard, Duke of York, the younger of the two sons of Edward IV who had been murdered in the Tower of London (1483). With the promise of support from many quarters in England, Ireland, Scotland, and on the European mainland, he made two unsuccessful attempts to invade England (1495–6), and was captured at Beaulieu during a third attempt (1497). Imprisoned in the Tower, he was executed after trying to escape. |
