| biography:
| Coach of American football, born in Staten Island, New York, USA. A former Harvard player, he coached two years at Cornell University (1900–1), then entered business. Lured back to coaching by Harvard alumni, he brought the Crimson to its greatest football heights (1908–16). His teams were noted for their use of tricky, open-style play rather than brute force. After military service in World War 1 and several years in business, he returned to coaching at Columbia University in 1923. |
