| Musicologist, born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at Oxford, then lectured there and at Manchester, London, and Cambridge. Appointed music critic to The Observer (1920–5), he became the first music adviser to the BBC, and edited The Oxford Companion to Music (1938). His reputation as a musicologist rests on his authorship of The Puritans and Music (1934) and The Life of Dr Burney (1948). |
